[gallery] Some would miss the old trail to Casaroro. It was more challenging, and reaching the Casaroro basin would earn for one the bragging rights. I remember a post from a friend in high school: “Nindot gyod to sa una, (you) hold on to vines and big tree roots. Then you slip a little, tumble a little, here and there. Unlike today…” Yes, unlike today, Casaroro then was free of those conc... Read more.

Internet usage became widespread, those who wanted a presence on the Internet had concerns in regard to the hassle and cost involved in having a website. Whether fun or money was the goal, to be one of the many who had an Internet presence, having a website was mandatory at the time. Amateur sites were available at lower cost, but lacked the type of content that most visitors would find impressive... Read more.

Cebu City (January 15) - For twenty years, my mother smoked stick after stick of what she used to call “low-class cigarette ra ni ‘day, kadaghan na ni hugasi, di na ni makadaot (this is of low-class quality dear Eleanor, tobacco leaves been washed several times, would do no more harm).” But last year, she began complaining of numbness traveling from the fingertips of her left hand, to the f... Dili tanang mosuwat, writer!

A... Read more.

The years from 2005 to 2015 have been agreed by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Decade on Water to address the issues relative to the world’s “troubled waters.” This span of time is - and would be – spent on dealing with water issues, it being critical for sustainable development, a resource that is indispensable for human health and wellbeing. The Naliyagan Festival of the province of Agusan del Sur brought over thirty youngsters to the Agusan Marshland as part of the 2nd Datu Lipus Macapandong Climb, Caving and Marshland Adventure which is one of the highlights of the said festivity. I believe the province prefer the young to be there because of our infectious adventurous spirit. It is indeed an honor to be part of that crowd becaus... Read more.

Ladder for life

Posted By Neil on January 22nd, 2010
A co-volunteer of Rescue 160 coined the expression “ladder for life” during one of the seminars we were required to attend. It was actually a pun for “slide for life” which he used to refer to the ladder techniques taught us. The phrase was coined primarily to give us the kick. Though “ladder for life” was at first a very awkward phrase, we have come to adopt it to refer to our roma... Read more.

In the islands, fishermen and farmers become extraordinarily interesting! It must have been very tough for them to master the temperament of nature and the tantrum of every tempest. But these men continue to live and enjoy the seas teeming with all of its bounty, as well as feast on the fruits of the earth. In this world, there is someone we call a “professional”, of whose expertise w... Read more.

All the frangipanis

Posted By Neil on January 17th, 2010
Countless white frangipanis are starting to come off the temple tree now. One by one, the wind’s unseen hands nipped them off their niche. Soon, more would be joining a pile of these white blooms on a journey to decay, blown beyond the concrete high fence where I believe they have chosen to lie. If only frangipanis have the eyes of today’s youth, certainly those would hold the stories of th... Read more.

The moon on perigee and Einstein

To stand rapt in awe. To always wonder that though heavenly bodies are untacked, they behave in a manner more sensible than those I voted for in the past elections. “The most beautiful thing we can witness is the mysterious. He to whom this emotion is a stranger - who no longer pauses to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead; eyes closed.” Physicist and father of relativity, Albe... Read more.
